A lot of people only think about Costa Rica in the dry season, from mid November to the end of April. But Guanacaste’s green season, roughly May through November, has a lot going for it, especially if you like quiet beaches, lush jungle and better value. Here’s what it’s really like.
What the weather is like
Green season doesn’t mean rain all day. A typical day starts sunny and warm, with clouds building in the afternoon and a shower or storm later in the day or overnight. Mornings are perfect for the beach, surfing or a hike, and afternoons are made for the pool, a nap or a good book. September and October tend to be the wettest months.
Why we love it
- The jungle comes alive. Everything turns green, the trees fill in, and the wildlife is busy. At La Junglita the howler monkeys visit almost every day.
- Quieter beaches. Playa Junquillal is never crowded, but in green season you can often have long stretches of sand to yourself.
- Better value. Rates are usually lower outside the holidays and high season, which makes longer stays more affordable.
- Sea turtles. The later months of the year are an active time for turtle nesting on Playa Junquillal.
Tips for a green season stay
- Plan beach days and outings for the morning.
- Rent a car with decent clearance, since some dirt roads get muddy after heavy rain.
- Pack a light rain jacket, quick dry clothes, sandals and bug spray.
- Keep a few indoor plans in mind: cooking a big meal, games, a movie night or a massage.
